Our Future!

Traditionally, Killinchy has seen its Minister, in conjunction with Kirk Session, oversee the spiritual leadership of Congregational life, while the Church Committee dealt with more temporal issues such as property maintenance and financial matters. It is now proposed to develop and indeed expand this current structure with the pivotal aim of involving more members of the congregation in the life and work of our Church.

Our Mission statement is

“to make people of all ages more aware of God’s relevance in today’s materialistic and secular society by helping and supporting them to become increasingly devoted followers of Jesus Christ through evangelism, teaching, fellowship and Christian example”.

It follows then, that such a structure should reflect the core values and vision of this Congregation.

Our Kirk Session has been looking at how this new structure might be achieved.  It has been decided to incorporate the current range of activities, together with new initiatives, under twelve relevant Ministries.  These areas of our Church Ministry will be supported by twelve separate working groups, made up of people from the congregation who have an interest, strength, or experience in relevant areas and who have a desire to serve the Lord in this way.   The Church Committee has also decided that there should be an overall business plan for the Church, with budgets to support the different activities of these working groups.

 A brief outline –

  • Nothing will be set in stone
  • Activities can be added or moved around the groups
  • Each working group will be chaired by a member of session
  • Emphasis will be on involving those in the 20 - 50 age range
  • Core of each working group will be from members of the Congregation
  • Encourage leadership to help ensure continuity in succession of management

In keeping with the Code of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland these working groups will report to the Kirk Session about matters of a spiritual nature, and to the Church Committee about matters of a financial or material nature.

The way forward

  • These working groups will be mentioned at a number of Sunday Services.
  • Members of the congregation will be invited to become part of these groups.
  • These meetings should take place as soon as practical and before the end of December 2009.
  • Purpose of each group will be explained in detail, and guidelines given on functioning.
  • A convener, not necessarily the Chairperson, should be appointed for each group.
  • Any member of a working group will be asked to serve no longer than 3 years.
  • Finance Committee will indicate a short-term budget for each group.
  • Groups to meet once every other month and can be subdivided as thought appropriate.
  • Strategic plan and budget, to end of year 2010, should be prepared  by end of January 2010

If you would like any more information, please speak to any member of Kirk Session.
