Angels can fly, because they take themselves lightly.  The devil fell because of the force of gravity.

Ps 1:1,2: Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

The first Psalm is like an introduction to the book of the Psalms.  All the rooms of the book of the Psalms can be unlocked with this key.  It is the key to happiness, in the midst of depression (Ps 88), sin and guilt (Ps 130), doubt (Ps 73) and the feeling that God has forsaken us (Ps 22).  It is the key to praise and worship (Ps 100).

What is this key?  The source of our lives, that which fills our lives with meaning, is the words of God (1:2).  The Word of God is the roots of the tree.  Whoever takes God’s words seriously, takes themselves lightly!  Whoever takes himself lightly bears the fruit that God brings about through his Word and Spirit (1:3).

This is so different in the lives of the sinners, wicked and mockers.  Their counsel and own wisdom weighs heavily for themselves (1:1).  The divine irony is that these people who think that they are so self-sufficient and autonomous actually weighs nothing when God judges (1:4,5).  Their lives are without roots and meaning.

Let this year be a period in which we take God’s word more seriously.  Let us take ourselves lightly!  This is the key to happiness.

Lord, let your word be the most important focus in my life, in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
