Thomas Merton said…

The most dangerous man in the world is the contemplative who is guided by nobody. He trusts his own visions. He obeys the attractions of an interior voice but will not listen to other men. He identifies the will of God with anything that makes him feel, within his own heart, a big, warm, sweet interior glow. The sweeter and the warmer the feeling is, the more he is convinced of his own infallibility (From: New Seeds of Contemplation)

Prov. 6:25-27: Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

J P Versteeg, a Dutch scholar, compares faith with a pilot who must listen to the voice from the control tower. Although no pilot can see the person in the control tower, he must be satisfied with the voice and trust the directions. If he does not obey the instructions of the control tower, it can be fatal.

What are the main adjustments required to be in tune with God's way? It is the willingness to listen (4:1-9, 13, and 20). To follow our own ways is one of the evils in the Proverbs and leads to one's downfall. If you want to walk God’s way, you have to listen to Him. Whoever listens to his advice, is preserved from the destructive influences in his or her life (4:23, 24)

Where are you going? It is a question all of us have to ask every day. Companies always ask where they are heading. Each congregation asks what they are doing and whether they are in tune with God's purpose. God's Word challenges us today with this question.

Yet there are many people who think that they can approach life without the instructions of God's control tower. Do you listen to His instructions? It will prevent you from going rudderless through life by following the evil thoughts in your heart (4:23-27).

Where are you going? It's good to hear this question all the time and to think about it, because we so easily go a different way than the Lord's way. Is there an adjustment necessary in your life today?

Spirit of God, make my ears open so that I will be able to go the way that you show me, instead of my own, in Jesus' name. Amen.
