The Wider World Group

The Third World group was formed 25 years ago (recently rename The Wider World Group) and over the years has raised in excess of £100,000 for overseas missions work. The group consists of about 15 regular members and is always looking for new members. Please keep an eye on the Church Calender for our meetings and feel free to join us.

The Petrus Family Project

Petrus is married and lives with his wife and six young children in a shack, which is not much bigger than a garden shed - in fact, there are probably bigger and better garden sheds in many parts of Killinchy! Just think about that for a moment!

Members of Killinchy Wider World Group (Ian Shanks, Margaret Johnston, Audrey McNally, Brian McGibbon) help load the “Cash for Clobber” bags.Petrus works as a cleaner and gardener for the Dutch Reformed Church with a weekly wage of just £55. The family live on the outskirts of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, about six miles away from his workplace. There is no toilet and no running water. Namibia is a country with one of the biggest gaps between rich and poor in the world.

So, the Petrus Family Project - to raise enough money to buy a modest house with running water, proper sanitation, and electricity. Costing in the region of £20,000, some £14,500 has already been raised and to bring the total needed even closer, Killinchy Wider World Group have recently encouraged members of the Congregation and friends to have a “Spring Clean”. Then by enlisting the help of “Cash for Clobber”, a scheme whereby used clothing, bed linen, towels, hats, belts bags, shoes, curtains and even drying cloths are exchanged for cash, the Group is now delighted to be able to contribute a further £318.50 to the project.

If you would like more details of or to support the Petrus Family Project or indeed any aspect of the work of Killinchy Wider World Group, then please contact the Church Office.
